This painting is based on a photograph I took in early February2020 - a month after the Black Summer fires - when a new landscape was spread before me to interpret. After much-needed rain showers, a flush of colour at last began to shine through all the blackness. Before the fires I had never painted sunrays, but somehow they subconsciously appeared in many of my early post-fire works. Maybe they arrived to help me express my own pain as well as the suffering, hurt and loss for the land and the creatures.
